Texas authorities seized $2.8 million in cryptocurrency from a ransomware operator
Texas authorities have charged Ianis Aleksandrovich Antropenko, a suspect in the operation of the Zeppelin ransomware, and confiscated over 2.8 million USD in cryptocurrency from his digital wallet. Six federal search warrants were executed in Virginia, California, and Texas, seizing an additional 70,000 USD in cash and a luxury car.
The prosecutor stated that Antropenko had attacked individuals, businesses, and global organizations, encrypting and stealing data, then demanding ransom. The seized amount is believed to be profits from ransomware, laundered through the cryptocurrency mixing platform ChipMixer ( which was dismantled in 2023) and small cash transactions.
The U.S. Department of Justice has stated that they have achieved over 180 convictions for cybercrime, recovered 350 million USD for victims, and prevented over 200 million USD in potential ransom, demonstrating a strong effort in dismantling ransomware groups.
