Texas police dismantle Crypto Assets ATM machines, recovering $25,000 in fraud losses.
Gate News bot reports that according to Cointelegraph, after a family in Texas was scammed out of $25,000, a county sheriff used a power-cutting tool to shut down a local Crypto Assets ATM. This action sparked controversy among Crypto Assets users regarding his behavior.
According to local reports on Tuesday, a scammer impersonated a government employee and tricked a family in Jasper County, northwest of Houston, into depositing money at a local Bitcoin (BTC) ATM.
Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard ( obtained a search warrant and shut down the ATM. Photos show that this ATM is marked as operated by Bitcoin Depot. Havard recovered about $32,000, which includes $25,000 that the family paid to the scammers.
Havard said that the scam call told the family they owed a $25,000 fine and instructed them to deposit the money into a Bitcoin address, after which the family used a Bitcoin ATM to transfer the funds.
